Herb Thursday: Eucalyptus Vapor Rub

We’ve been battling some upper respiratory crud this week, and the children have been miserable with sniffles, sneezing and coughing. Getting sick is a rare occurrence around here, but when it happens, it tends to hit everyone at the same time

Whenever I was sick with a cold, my dad would put Vicks Vapor Rub on my back to help with my breathing. I wanted a more natural alternative to Vicks for the kids to help them sleep better at night while battling this head cold.

I prepared a simple ointment containing eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender in an almond oil base. I have been rubbing on their backs. This stuff smells so good, my kids love it! They bring me the jar each night when we are getting ready for bed. It has helped them sleep better while they are getting over this cold.

Eucalyptus-Peppermint-Lavender Vapor Rub

1/2 cup almond oil

1 – 2 Tbsp carnauba wax

20 drops eucalyptus (~1 %) – double for an adult batch

10 drops peppermint (~ 0.25%) – double for an adult batch

10 drops lavender

Combine almond oil and carnauba wax in top pot of double boiler (use two pots, a smaller one sitting in larger one filled with water, if needed). Warm oil and wax until wax has completely melted. Check final consistency of mixture by removing a small spoonful and placing in fridge to cool. Adjust consistency by adding more carnauba wax (if too runny) or more almond oil (if too hard) to the pot. After adjusting consistency, remove from heat and add essential oils. Transfer to glass container and cool on counter or in fridge. Cover with lid when cool.

Note: Eucalyptus  and peppermint are not recommended on young children, so I have only used on my older two. I also make sure not to put on the face (back only). I have also lowered the amount of eucalyptus and peppermint.
